haaaark the heeeeerald angels ssiiiiiiinnnngg

What a week! Sister Clement and I had a great week! We've really enjoyed working together during this time of year. There really is a Christmas spirit that is just so strong this time of year! We decided to really seize that and do all we could with it.

Before I say anything else, I just have to say that this week didn't go at all the way we'd planned. We set our goals as numbers that we really expected we could achieve this week, and then through the week there were a couple of times that it seemed there would be no way to achieve them! BUT. The best part of that was counting them up yesterday and realizing how blessed we truly were, regardless of the bumps along the way.

Our Christmas was an adventure! I woke up feeling pretty sick, and as soon as Sister Clement started feeling sick as well, we decided it was likely food poisoning from the Christmas party we'd been to the night before. We had ups and downs all day, but were still able to talk to people, have a really positive first lesson with a man named J, sing Christmas songs to some people, and be the subjects of familie Van Gijsel's Christmas hospitality. We are very grateful for it all, even though we did have a pretty rough day as far as things go physically.

We had plenty of miracles this week, not the least of which was feeling better after a few days of being sick and being able to do missionary work without that extra obstacle, but I wanted to share about one of our baptismal dates, R. R is from Angola - he was a referral from a man in our branch. R speaks decent Dutch, but Portuguese is his mother language, and what a blessing it is that we have 3 different couples in our branch who speak Portuguese so that he can hear the basis of the gospel is his own tongue! Last week we invited Rafael to be baptized in January. The date ended up being a little bit foggy, as two were talked about, so we clarified it in a lesson yesterday. He will be baptized on the 25th of January! The special thing about this is R's great faith! When we asked him which date of the two he'd like to strive for (the 11th or the 25th), the first thing that he said was that he knew that through God, he could reach even the first one, though he struggles with addictions and does not know a ton about the gospel yet. That was so neat to hear! He did end up choosing the 25th, because he says he would like to be able to learn things more in depth before he takes the step of baptism. We're excited to talk to him about the gospel of Jesus Christ next time, and really get more into why baptism is so important!

I loved studying hope this week, especially because I sure felt hopeless a few times. The biggest reason that I decided it's important to have hope in the future because of Jesus Christ's atonement is that if I have that hope in Him, my will and his will will align! And if that happens, why should I ever worry about the future - it's secure.

Well... There's always so much more I wanna say but I am OUT of time.
Love you all SO MUCH. ECHT WAAR.

Freezing!!!!!

It is COLD here. Actually today is okay but goodness it is WINDY everywhere. I miss snow, that's way better!

I had the opportunity to speak in sacrament meeting yesterday. I spoke on missionary work and how members are the best manner to find people. I was so thankful for the opportunity to give the whole branch a challenge! I rechallenged them what Elder Ballard challenged everyone in Conference - to share the gospel with someone before Christmas. I talked about the power of the Book of Mormon and encouraged them to use it - to give one away before Christmas. Branch Turnhout has a goal to give away 100 before the end of the year, and they are currently at 89, and if many of them give one away, they will greatly surpass that goal! I think that's neat.

I had some real testimony builders of the gift of tongues this week, too. I am so grateful that I am not speaking this language all on my own. There were a couple days this week where it was more difficult to speak, but most days - if I was relying on the Lord that day, or in that moment, my Dutch was fantastic  - I had no problem communicating. It's incredible the difference between when we rely on ourselves and when we put up our hands and let Christ steer for us. It's all about His will!

We set another baptismal date this week with M! L, her boyfriend, would have none of that. He said he'll come to her baptism but he's already baptized and he's not getting baptized again. We are praying for his heart to be softened, and to know how we can help him to see the need for baptism!

We also had a really great lesson with I and J last night on the Atonement. It's incredible how many questions Imad has that I have just honestly never thought about before. I learn so much from our lessons! It's also amazing the difference that the Spirit makes in a lesson. Testifying of Christ brings it so strongly!

Soooo we found out in district meeting last week that we're actually supposed to be studying humility this week. They changed the order... So. My study on humility is not quite complete yet but we were asked to read Matthew 5-7 and think about it in relation to humility, and I love it. As I read chapter 5 I really thought a lot about my pride, and how I tend to have a hard time giving up my own ideas for those of other people, or being quick to have kind thoughts about others. That's something that comes with charity as well, I think, so I am going to strive harder to pray for charity, and to be kinder to those around me and remember that Christ loves them just as much as he loves me, and I shouldn't be so eigen wijs. I am excited to continue that study until district meeting on Tuesday next week!

Looking forward to zone conference on Thursday with Elder Texeira! I shall let you know how it goes. :)

I love you all so much! Thank you so much for your support and for all that you do for me. I pray for you every day!

Love love love!! :)

Staying in Turnhout!!

We had a roller coaster of a morning, due to several people thinking our phone number was that of the Antwerpen Zone Leaders and calling us while we waited for transfer calls, but we are glad to know that we're staying here in lovely little Turnhout! There is much to be done here, and we've found some really incredible people this week!

We found the most wonderful couple last Sunday, and got to teach them twice this week! They're not married yet, but we hope to help change that. She is Flemish and is pregnant with their child. She's due in January, and is Agnostic. He is Moroccan and is technically Muslim but is "op zoek" for the truth. They have been so prepared for the gospel! They're so open to learning, and are so willing to try things! It's definitely not going to be easy, but goodness, they are so worth it.

I'm a little bummed to move on from Charity, but I'm thinking I may just have it as something I specifically strive for this upcoming transfer. I'm definitely still excited to study patience!

Quickly...

LIST!!!!!!
-WELCOME HOME OMA AND OPA! I wanted to call you but then I didn't know when you were leaving on Thursday and then it didn't happen and I was super sad... But I love you!
-I ate an entire can of whipped cream on Saturday. Don't ever try it, even if it's a competition with other people and it seems like it'll be fun. I didn't sleep that night due to sugar coursing through my veins.
-We had Stake conference and it was AWESOME. Elder Adler of the Seventy was there and he was super cool. I'll have to write more details about it in my letter but the one thing you should know is that he challenged the members to find someone to share the gospel with in the next WEEK. Then he told us missionaries to follow up. WOOO no pressure members! I am so excited - I know he is inspired of God and that we will see miracles through this if the members listen to him!
-We visited an inactive lady, Zuster K, and now she's coming to church this coming Sunday!! :)
-I bought a really awesome warm coat!
-I'm continuing my study on charity this week because it was AWESOME. Also, read Alma 26. It's my favorite!!

We contacted a referral from the elders to Geel on Thursday. She's from Sri Lanka and she's Catholic, but she knows almost nothing about prophets, or the bible, or even Christ. It is so interesting to me to meet people like that. They've grown up religious, but they don't learn much. I'm so excited to teach her about it all, and give her a Tamil Book of Mormon!

Fwd:

That awkward moment when I didn't ever send my draft from last week.... DARN IT. But. I have a little time to write so I shall do that now, and the end is from last week.

So as you may have noticed, we changed our P-Day this week! It was a holiday on Monday so a lot of people were home. We were able to have some great lessons on Monday that would not have worked out if we'd not been able to switch things around. Actually, I would really like to talk about Monday - it was a great learning day.

We were worried in the morning because we had two appointments that we had still not been able to find joint teaches for, what with it being a holiday and all - one that night, which occurred due to a lack of forethought on our part - family night! We prayed that we'd somehow be able to find a joint teach at least for the one in the morning. After our companionship study prayer, we both felt that we should call a sister who lives a block away from the potential investigator who was our first appointment. We called her and she said yes! The second appointment was still going to be a problem, until Sister Clement remembered that there was a sister who puts her children to bed early every night, so she thought maybe they would be finished with FHE. We called her and sure enough, the timing was perfect for her! We were so grateful! I am so glad that we held hope, even though we couldn't originally think of how it would work out.

The story doesn't end there - our appointments didn't go the way we expected (one potential didn't show up for his appointment, and in the other appointment we had a hard time keeping our potential focused, and helping him understand our purpose as missionaries). But it was a testimony builder for me that even though things don't always go as planned, Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers! :)

I had a wonderful study of hope this week, in which I decided that worry is the opposite of hope. Hope should be just as sure as worry usually is. I'm so excited for my study on charity - I feel like it's something I can really work on! Study it with me, eh? :)

Last week -
Thanks for all the birthday wishes!!! Helaas, due to the fact that I got a ton of emails, I ran out of time to email much here.... SORRY!

Have a super awkward picture of us at Isaac's baptism!

Baptism!!!!

It was incredible to see I get baptized on Saturday, and then receive the Holy Ghost on Sunday! In his blessing he was told that he will have a great influence in bringing friends and family to the light of the Gospel - so neat! It was all very humbling for me because really, all I did was come in, make friends with him, and watch him get baptized. The more I think about it though, the more I realize that's pretty much what every situation is. We're not the teachers, we just have to bring the Spirit into the equation, help them in whatever ways they need help, and then watch them do the changing themselves, through the Holy Ghost. It's the LORD'S work, not ours!

I studied a bit about obedience this week, but honestly, I didn't study it nearly as much as I learned about it from experience. I took Ether 12:27 to heart and asked the Lord to show me my weaknesses... He did, and let me just say, it was very humbling. I keep realizing how prideful I can really be, and how changing that can and will help me to give up my will to the Lord, which I have been commanded to do! I'm looking forward to studying Faith this next week. I feel a lot like the father of the child with palsy - I will definitely be asking for the Lord to help my unbelief so that I can truly have the faith I need to be the best missionary I can be!

Okay I really ran out of time this time. Uhhhhhh pictures next week.

Belgian keyboards make me cry

This is gonna be short, probably, because I have a pretty decent amount of time, but this keyboard is AZERTY. Hereùs q sentence typed zithout fixing things. Really annoying, right? Ah well. I'll deal with it!

Belgium is pretty cool! I do have to say that it kinda stinks here (in some places more than kinda), but so far my least favorite thing is that the keyboards are different, so I'm fine. :) Vlaams is pretty much ridiculous though. Haha. Think... Irish people in English. It's still Dutch, but barely, and so accented! I'm getting used to it slowly. :) I'm excited to see Oma and Opa on Wednesday[they are still in Deventer], and to go to the temple! It's been SOOOO LONG.

We have a baptism on Saturday! His name is I and he is marvelous. He is from Kyrgmenistan... Did I spell that right? He's super neat and I'm so excited for him :) We saw some super cool miracles this week,

Hey! Gruppman! I still have not met them but hope to. I'm glad the concert zas good! [Parents went to a concert conducted by Igor Gruppman who also lives in Rotterdam part of the time.]

Sister Clement is fantastic!

Thank you for all of your support and prayers - I have been feeling them lately. Especially with this transfer... I didn't really feel ready to leave Deventer, but there's a reason I need to be here, I know!

I love you so much!

T-t-t-t-transfers!

Last P-day in Deventer -

I'm sure going to miss this place. I love these members and the missionaries who serve here (like my grandparents!). I've made some incredible friends here (like my JoVos... :( ) and my goodness, I've learned so much. I'm excited for the change, but it may not be an easy transition.

Wish I could write more, but I've got no time...

Turnhout, Belgium... Sister Clement... Here I come!

Miracles and Confereeeence!

Oh my goodness I hope you all loved conference as much as I did. I still haven't been able to hear the last session. Bah! It's driving me nuts. I may be able to in just a little bit here... We'll see.

As I've been out on my mission, I've realized that phrases like "That was lucky" and "how ironic" and "what a coincidence" are just a lie! Nothing is chance; nothing is coincidence. The Lord is so aware of all of his children, and he has a plan for EACH of us, not just everyone as a general whole!

Sister Townsend always told me that General Conference was a time of miracles, and I was able to see that these past few days! On Saturday we visited a referral - a man named L , who is a refugee from Afghanistan. He converted to Christianity about a year and a half ago here in the Netherlands! We invited him to come to General Conference that night. He loved it and asked to come the next day. He spent the entire day with us yesterday at the church! We haven't even had an official lesson with him yet and he's already said he'd like to prepare to be baptized. Very neat, very faithful man. We have an appointment with him tomorrow - I'll let you know what happens!

We also found J! Turns out she was here the whole time! There was some weird thing that happened where she was sent to Amsterdam because they wanted to deport her, but then, after being kept there for 3 days, she was sent back. The government said there was no reason for her to be deported... Go figure. We just happened to see her as we went to visit L on Saturday - she lives in the same camp that he does. It was absolutely not any coincidence. We have a lesson with her tomorrow as well!

Another neat thing about this week is that we have 3 dinner appointments that are with inactive members of our ward! We've really started to see the fruits of our efforts with the inactive and less-active members of this ward. Super cool! We're looking forward to keeping that up.

I was so inspired by conference. I am so excited to apply it in my work! This week I'm studying diligence, but I am also taking a leaf out of Elder Soares' book and studying the Christlike attribute of meekness along with that. I had a great study today and am excited to continue it this week. :) STUDY WITH MEEEE :)

We have temple conf in two weeks and I'm PSYCHED but I don't get to see the new movie because it won't be translated for like a year. :(
Amersfoort for church starts next week! (Moms side note: She will be traveling there to church, an hour away, while current building is being worked on.) Transfers are also next week so we'll see... Most trainers and trainees only stay together for two transfers...

Love you all -

quick

Literally no time, but this week was good! We had zone conference, which was the bomb, and I got to see some of my favorite people from Rotterdam zone. Liiiiiiiiiiike
FAMILY PICTURE. Plus the weird cousin? Ha I don't know. This is my lovely first daughter there on the left (of the picture, not of me, that's my second daughter). Also, my great friend Elder Huff there in the background. It looks like it wasn't on purpose but he was totally photobombing.

Ummm... Yes. We had a couple appointments but we REALLY need to find more investigators because we're running out. It happens. We've been a little lame with stuffing the funnel full... Changing that.

All the time I have! Agh!

Love you all!

"From a Jewish guy to you, 'Mazel tov!'"

Hey all, here's a little update! Sorry it's been a while...

We have had a great couple weeks with members. We're getting to know a lot more active ones and we've had appointments with several more inactives. It's been great! Unfortunately, in our focus on the members, we let our potentials/investigators pool run a little bit low, so we're struggling a bit on that side. That's something I didn't really think about before I came out - missionary work is a balance of several things. You have to work with members (inactive and active), find investigators, teach investigators, report to Church leaders, eat, sleep, study... Sometimes you work too much on one or two and the others suffer.

We had to drop one investigator due to his unwillingness to keep commitments (he's had the lessons before and knows the church is true but won't change the way he lives), which was really hard because we know he just needs to make the decision to do that and he'll progress, but we felt very at peace about the whole thing afterward, which was good. We've also not been able to come in contact with another one of our investigators for a couple of weeks. Fortunately, we have a couple of potentials who have been very busy the past few weeks but are now willing, and even excited, to meet with us! One is a former investigator who is a young Dutch girl. She just lost her aunt to cancer. We're really excited to teach her about the Plan of Salvation! The other is a German girl who's here studying tourism. I met her on exchanges with Sister Hudson and we helped her move into her apartment. We're excited to meet with her and to tell her about our message!

I hope that everything is going well with jullie (you, plural. Why isn't there one in English? Y'all.)! I'm so grateful for the support and the prayers. I pray for all of you as well! Much love!

Still alive, I promise

Hey everyone, it's been a few weeks! I have run out of time again because of P-day activities that we didn't know were occurring, but I am still alive, and the work is still going! Promise. :) I'll try my best to write a legitimate post next week. Much love!

Another week another euro?

WOW goodness I've got just a few minutes to speed type. I don't have my full hour because we had a super cool opportunity today to go to this zoo called the Apenheul - it's mostly monkeys! It was suuuuuuper cool. :) We saw lots of monkeys! Also, we went with our district, which is always a blast. . I attached a picture! The other girl with us is a member in Zwolle. She's named Segijna (no idea how to spell that really) and she's SUPER cool. She speaks American because she went to Philly on her mission!

*My bike got STOLEN last week. Really truly. Super sad. I think that was last Monday? But it's whatever, I'm getting another one from a member in Zwolle who's super nice. I'm actually more bummed about my fietstas (bike bag) than the bike itself, I think.... That thing could hold the world. I'm borrowing opa's until I get my new bike.  It was bound to happen sometime!

Belgium in comparison with the Netherlands is stinky and more French. So.... I prefer the Netherlands to the parts of Belgium I've experienced.

Lastly, I've got a spiritual thought here. I had the opportunity to give a little talk on Virtue in district meeting today. In my studies for the talk, I realized that to me, virtue is giving up our will to for the Lord's. If we have righteous desires, those come from Christ, not from within us, because the natural man is an enemy to God. So how important to not only to do what the Lord wants, but also to want the things that He wants for us, and to think them! I highly recommend reading 2 Nephi 2:27-35 with that in mind. Nephi is an incredible example of virtue.

Wellllll until next week, homies. I love you all. :)

You may look like a missionary but you will never bring your family honor

The subject line was said by me, quoting Mulan, on like, Wednesday, when I was feeling like I needed to work harder. Also, I was feeling silly. Ha.

The work is going along wonderfully out here. :) We had our very first investigator go to church yesterday! Her name is J  and she's from Liberia. She LOVED IT. She asked if she could come more. Uhhhhh YES :)

I've been so humbled in the last week. Well... I've had humbling experiences. Working on the humbled part still. Nothing like a mission to make you feel that it's a great thing you have eternity to get better cos you sure need it. Haha. :)

Ummm... So sorry. But that's all I have time for. :(
Love you all SO MUCH. Don't ever forget that

Also, ik heb een uitdaging voor jullie: Get some copies of Preach My Gospel, and study one Christlike attribute from chapter six every week. It does WONDERS.

Love you so much.

Allll right, iedereen! It's time for a Tuesday session of "Sister Anjewierden rambles about her week!" I must say, this'll be so much easier in person next fall. SO MUCH.

Wow, I can't believe it's August. I thought it was just March? Wasn't it? And right before that it was October, and President Monson was announcing the age change, and... I've been out for almost 5 months. Whoa

I really feel like since I've been out, there's been more talk of missionary work. There's always a lot, but I really feel like there's been even more. I know that the Lord is hastening His work. I´m SO excited about it, too. I just want all these unhappy people out here to know that they can be happy! Speaking of which, we had an appointment today with a JoVo (YSA).  The Elders from Apeldoorn talked to him about six months ago and so I guess he came and talked to oma and opa the other day because he felt like he needed to. They called us and we set up an appointment with him. The guy has DEEP questions about life. Super deep. It was a hard lesson, because they were hard questions to answer even in English and I had to do it in Dutch, but it was so NEAT. We have another lesson with him on Thursday. I ended up just telling him at the end that we can answer his questions and talk at him til we're red in the face, but unless he comes to know the truth for himself, it doesn't really matter. He agreed. We're teaching him the first lesson on Thursday. :) I'm so excited! We just need a joint teach...

Please watch the new Mormon Message for Youth! It's called A Secure Anchor. So good. :)

And just a little thought here - people often accuse us of "blind faith". I'm realizing out here that doesn't have to even be a thing. Do what's right because you want to. Make the choice to be happy and to obey the commandments because you realize it will bring you more happiness. Do it because you love God and you know He loves you. You will be so blessed - I promise. Peter 3:15. Hope is not unsure.

Well, I've gotta go, but I sure love you all. :)

I don't think we're in Kansas anymore...

Opening and training... It's super humbling, lemme tell ya. Opening is super different than what I'd gotten used to - Dordrecht had been open for yeeeeears. So. We're almost two weeks into the transfer and were blessed to be able to set an appointment with a guy yesterday - he'll be our first investigator here! He's suuuuper positive. The man'll get baptized, no doubts here. :) Whether it's while I'm here or someone else is!

Well, I hope everyone is doing well! I have so much respect for each one of you - really. Just remember, it's all about the work! :)

Alma 26:27... Yup.

Sorry, wish I could write more, but I'm just about out of time... Next week. Promise.

Hello everyone!
This is gonna be a short one... I planned badly. Bad trainer aghhhh!
I hope that everyone's week went well! Mine did! Just crazy. And a little sad and a little different and a little nervewracking and maybe even a little scary and a little stressful (okay a lot) and plenty happy and mostly crazy!
It's still a little crazy to think that I see Oma and Opa  almost every day now, and that we're ACROSS THE WORLD. What?!
Sister Thorley is the bomb.com. :) I miss Sister Elting, of course (A LOT, she and I are preeeetty much best friends), but I sure love Sister Thorley. I'm trying really hard to be a good trainer but so far I've been really impatient and really... I dunno. I just need to be better! I'm working on it. :)
Deventer is beautiful. It's really difficult to come into an area and start the work up... M (investigator from China), S's friend that Oma talked about, was just a blessing from above, really. We're super grateful that S invited her. She's still our only investigator, and she's marvelous. :) We have a lesson with her in just a bit, actually!
Here is Schniu (Kira's gnome traveling companion) by a windmill in 'S-gravendeel (in Dordrecht area). Isn't that awesome?

Also, please pray that I'll have the courage to find people. I sure lose a lot of confidence when someone tells me they're not interested or don't have time, and often I just give up on the contact... The Lord wouldn't!! AGH.
Love you all. Wish I could say more, but...

DEVENTER!
That´s right folks. I´m training in Deventer this transfer ´round. :)
When the phone rang last night, I knew it. I just did. My heart leaped for joy and sank all at the same time though, because this also means that I have to leave Dordrecht... And Sister Elting. She and I are quite the pair. She´s like my favorite person. Seriously. We´re super similar, but different enough to keep things exciting. Also, she´s hilarious. And I´m hilarious. So. Yeah. For instance, we´re gonna write a musical. A Missionary musical. That´s real. Also, more seriously, we were just starting to reaaally figure out the working in unity thing. Fortunately, we´ll both be here for a while longer, and there´s a chance we can be companions again. I put it in the Lord´s hands. But I just may pray for it... Haha.

Well in other news, Redemption Week this week was incredible! We learned so much. Like about prayer! Blessings? Heavenly Father´s already willing to give them to us. WE JUST HAVE TO ASK. That was such a huge revelation for me- I´d not ever thought about it that way. But it´s true! Don´t forget to talk to Heavenly Father like he´s your dad. Don´t just ask Him for stuff, thank Him for stuff. And tell Him stuff! He wants to hear from you!

There were so many miracles this week that I don´t even know what to share. Here´s one - The only girl I contacted this week (yeah, it´s super bad) was from Russia and she knew about the church! Elders there taught her English. She asked if we could teach her Dutch! UM YES. It was amaaaazing. We got her number, and she didn´t come to church yesterday, but hopefully we can set something up with her soon.

We had a Stake Barbeque last Saturday for Pioneer Day. That was fun! We were super late ´cos we figured we should be out doing work first, but then we wished we´d gone earlier because we were able to talk to some non-members and that was super neat. Also, I felt like I was in Utah for like... Half an hour. It would´ve been more but for the rest of the time we were talking to people in Dutch... That´s not so American-feeling. We talked to these like 12ish-year-old girls as we walked back to the train afterward and they thought it was SO cool that we were from America, and that is was gezellig that we were roommates. Haha. It´s fun to talk to the kids here. :)

Well... As usual, there´s not a ton of time, but I hope all is well there! Keep cool in that heat wave I keep hearing about! (it´s like 90° F even though it feels like a million with the humidity, so I don´t envy you Utahns). LOVE!

BWAHHHHHHHH

Due to a few bad planning decisions, we're in the library 15 minutes before it has to close, only having had 15 minutes to email thus far. And I need to email my family and mission president. So. Um. We're doing well, if SUPER missing Sister Townsend. Figuring things out with each other... Trying to help our ward... And preaching the gospel in alles! Onward. Your prayers are appreciated! Thanks everyone for your support. :)

Oh Say Can You See?

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULYYYYYYYYYYYYY! :) Hope it was lovely for all.

I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to rotate this picture. So... Have an awkward sideways picture of me at the Atomium, a crazy building from the 1958(I think? If I remember right) Brussels World's Fair. :) It's super cool! And weird. But cool!
Yes, I did also see Manneken Pis, the statue of the little boy peeing... Reeeeal classy, Brussels. But it's like 400 years old so I guess that part is cool.
And I'd have a picture of me eating a legitimate Belgian waffle, but it was literally so delicious that I didn't want to get my camera out. So... Sorry. But... Not really! Haha. SO GOOD. If you ever have a chance... Probeer maar! (try please!)
I was in Belgium for legality reasons - we had to "sign in" in order to get our Belgian legality cards.

I don't have a ton of time, but I just want to share a little spiritual message with y'all quickly.
My lovely trainer, Sister Townsend, left us today, but first, she said this -

"People know the gospel is true, they just don't know it's the gospel."

Think about that one for awhile, eh? Your friends all have a testimony, somewhere buried... Just share something with em. Just try. :)

Love!

BAHHH

K y'all. I literally have like... 4 minutes or something. Dus (so)... This'll be fast.

We've decided we're going to focus a bunch in the coming weeks on inactive members! Our ward has 150ish members, with 46 active. Ouch. We have a TON of work to do.

I'm going to Belgium on Wednesday to do legality stuff! I'm stoked out of my mind. Missionary road trip!

We're looking for new investigators. Lots of people are being flauw (uhh... hm. Doesn't really translate. Wishy-washy I guess?), so we're trying to find people who will actually progress toward baptism! Our mission standard is 3-5 progressors, and there are at LEAST that many people in Dordrecht who have that potential!

Miracles will happen here. :) Just gotta work work work!

Love ya all!

I love my mission. There are truly miracles every week. Last Monday night, a man asked us for the address of the church. That was the first thing he did. That's it. Ridiculous. Then he said he'd come... He didn't, but still! He's coming next week for sure. Oh, and he's making us dinner on Thursday. He's Moroccan so I'm SUPER excited. :)
Oh PS, we were told in Zone Conf last week that our investigators names cannot be posted on the internet. So...

We ran into some road blocks with our investigators... Trying to get them worked out. Please, do member missionary work! If the members here would do it, our jobs would be so much easier!

You're all incredible! God loves us all SO MUCH. And Christ died for EVERYONE. That's so unfathomable. And amazing!

Love!

And Audrey Dixon!

WHOOPS I mean Audrey Barrett! Whaaaat even is that?! That's so crazy! :) Congrats to you and to Ryan and I love ya both! Also thanks for the invitation, I might have almost cried with joy. Just sayin.

Amy Rallison. I love you. Thank you so much for the announcement! I was super surprised! Ha. :)

The week I ALMOST visited the Ark

Well, another week past! I loved this week. I've learned SO MUCH. Really though, that's every week!
List time, as per usual. I'll probably figure this emailing thing out like the week before I leave.
Can't remember if I talked about our blind investigator, but she just walked into church a couple of weeks ago and told us she'd found the church on the internet, had been praying to see if it was true, and wanted to be baptized. Miracles, folks. Unfortunately, she's having trouble with the decision that the Ward Council made that she can't bring her seeing eye dog to church due to allergies from the other members... We're still meeting with her, and she's coming with us to the Young Adult service in Gouda next week!
The investigator from the Ivory Coast is getting baptized the 30th!
I'm training Sister Chelsea Elting from Idaho Falls. She's an amazing missionary - she should be training me! Training is super humbling... I feel so blessed to have the opportunity!
I hope all is well with y'all! I love missionary work, and all of you!

We all know God listens to Coldplay

Ah, email time. The time when I forget everything that happened during the week and go into panic mode because there's not enough time in the world for me to explain how much has happened, and how much I love missionary work! Haha.
I decided I'd better just start keeping these short. The work is moving forward! I found out on Sunday that I'm TRAINING. On my second transfer. Sooooo... Tomorrow. I will go to Leiden, and I will get a greenie, and a greenie will train another greenie. Dus.
We now have a legit baptismal date with  a quiet man from the Ivory Coast. He's suuuuper awesome. And he WILL be baptized on the 30th of this month, punt. :) He's almost quit smoking! Down to one every other day.
Sister Townsend is trying not to get trunky! I try to keep her on her toes. ;) She leaves in 4 weeks... I don't know what I'll do without her! We have super-companionship-unity. We say the same thing at the same time. A lot. And we just... Work. I love that woman. Also, her taste in music. There was a parade that went by our house the other night and a band played Boston's "Carry on my Wayward Son".... We jammed. Yup. Good times. :)
Wellll... That's probably good for today. Gotta go email the fam!
Reading assignment for this week is Exodus 3. Moses is awesome. Punt.
Love!

All right jongens!

Quickly - (Again, sorry. Happens every week. I'm gonna write something of substance at some point.)
Four new investigators this week! One is blind and she's basically already converted... Just needs to be taught and baptized. Super neat. :)
Read Alma 7! It's my chapter of the week.
Be SO happy for American cigarette smoke. European kind is much worse.
I find out if I'm training next Sunday! Super crazy. We think we'll probably be in a threesome because Sister Townsend leaves the 10th of July!
We biked 36 km (about 22 miles) on Friday to go to a dinner appointment. I'm serious right here. Also, there were lots of hills. Haha. :)
Today I'm dressed like a 60's housewife. Dutch class. Or something like that!
The work is going forth, I know that for sure. Also, you can help SO MUCH. Missionaries love when members help. Invite them over for dinner and let them practice lessons... Go on joint teach... Give them referrals... Do it. :)
Love!

sorryyyy

It's official, I'm writing next weeks post slowly through the week as things happen. I have NO TIME left.

This week all my stuff has been breaking... That's lame. BUT the work moves forward nonetheless!

The gospel is true. I know that. :)

Another week, another not enough TIME

LIST TIME because I literally have like four minutes. Also, I wrote the MTC advice, sisters, so it's coming next week, promise. The library we're at is closing. Poo.
Cheap chocolate here is like expensive American chocolate! So good!
Today we went to Gouda and played korfbal! It was awesome!
We found this super amazing Ghanaian family on Saturday and their son ASKED for a Book of Mormon. Before we offered it. WHAT? So cool!
Dordrecht is SO cute. I'll post pictures next week!
I popped a bike tire and it's super annoying because I have to ride on the back of Sister Townsends bike. Better than just walking, but annoying nonetheless! Getting it figured out tomorrow!
I love my district!
I speak a lot of NederEngels here.
MMMMM look up fufu. So good.
K I HAVE TO GO BUT I LOVE YOU ALL!

4.25.2013

Goedemorgen!

Hallo all!

SUPER quick update because I'm running out of TIME and this is the last chance I have to say last minute things to people that I have to say before leaving the country!!!

-I have a cold

-BYU Mens Chorus sang for us for devotional on Sunday night. It made my life.

-You can watch Mormon.org videos during additional study or mission portal time... I may or may not have watched the Brandon Flowers one mostly so that I could hear "Crossfire" playing in the background... I'm going through withdrawals. Haha. I sing Ingrid Michaelson and The Staves and Death Cab for Cutie and Coldplay in the shower. Oh, and shower choirs are the greatest thing of my life. Just saying.

-I can't believe I'm so close to being done! 3 more days!

-I will miss my zone SO MUCH. I'm getting all of everyone's information. Yeah. For serious. We're super tight.... It's awesome. :)

-I keep trying to not think about the fact that 1- I won't see my teachers after this week and 2- I won't see the people I'm with (the two Dutch districts) all the time after we split up on Tuesday... :( I'm so excited for it all but it's so bittersweet!

-I'll do a full MTC advice email next week for people coming in (Monica Baer, this is for you ;) ). I'm writing it on the plane. It's going to be awesome. But just know this now - the MTC is so awesome. If you want to love it, you'll love it. And actually... I'd have to try really hard to hate it here. It's marvelous.

-Megan Squire, I need you in my life. You should email me. :) Also... Pretty much everyone that is reading this. Haha. Letters/emails/DearElders are the greatest ever.

-DearElders must be sent today or tomorrow (anytime), or Saturday before noon to get to me before I leave! They'll shred any that are sent after I leave, so just email me or write me snail mail-wise otherwise.

LOVE YOU ALL

Ay mon, kop me een soft!

So I didn't get to finish last week... And the week before that apparently couldn't get through due to pictures... So here is last week, AND the week before, and this week. Email-ception.

Week 3

"The title of this means "Yeah man, buy me a soda!" in Sranam Tongo (Suriname Tongue), and I wish I could post a recording because it's hilarious. Two of our teachers went to Suriname and they're awesome!

Ummm... I kinda ran out of time. List again! I think I'll write this completely out next week so that it's just done and I can type it and not think...

Zuster Hudson and I got called as Coordinating Sisters for our Branch! That means we work with the Zone Leaders and Branch President and we keep the sisters in line (aka we love them to death because they're amazing).
Nederlands is moeilijk, but heel fantastis! Ik hou van het! Mijn is pretty all right. Ik sprek weel Neder-Engels. :)

Go look up The Character of Christ by Elder David Bednar! It was amazing! We watched it Sunday night.

Sheri Dew and Bishop Causse came on Sunday for Easter! It was so super wonderful! :)

Scriptures of the week - Moses 6:32 and Ether 12:12. Look em up,  they helped me so much this week!

We have SO much Easter food. I have a drawerful, and the other girls have a ton too... Haha it's bad!

I'm super psyched for General Conference! Truth! I hope you all are too! :)

AHHHH okay gotta be done. Love you all. Have some pictures."

And now week 4!

"Let it be known to all...

I LOVE GENERAL CONFERENCE! AHHH.

It was so good. :) It's pretty much an MTC holiday. You just kinda wake up and eat and go to conference and eat and go to conference and eat and go to conference! Yayyyyy. :) It was such a wonderful weekend. My favorite talk was probably President Packer's in the first session... But it's so hard to pick a favorite. Oh, and I cried when the YW presidency got released. They were wonderful! I know the new presidency will be wonderful too, but this was my presidency! Haha.

Okay, so, quickly -

Vocal Point came for our devotional after conference! It was so great! They were awesome.

Ik hou van het Nederlands (Dutch - I know I'll love de Nederland also but I'm not there yet!) Het einde.

I have a temporary companion! Her name is Sister Shayla Peterson. She is going to Denmark - her distrct was temporarily reassigned to Nashville, and they left Monday, but she had to stay cos she has mono. It's sad! But she's a super trooper! She ahs the greatest attitude. Also, the doctor cleared her today (the 11th), so she leaves whenever she leaves!

Elder Gerald N. Lund (who wrote The Work and the Glory series) came for Tuesday devortional! It was wonderful! He spoke on revelation. I absolutely needed it.

There was a bat ouside our room on like Tuesday night! It was kind of fun, actually, except it was after quiet hours, and there was lot of singing. Pff, cmon sisters. It's tiny. And cute.

I auditioned to do a musical number today with Zuster Wood from my district, who's amazing at the piano! We're in the "yes pile" - we'll see what that means. If hnothing else, it was wonderful to practice with her! I miss inging just to sing!

2.5 weeks left to go, folks.

ROMANS 5:6-8!"

OKAY THIS WEEK (5) -

SUPER quick so I can write a nice long email to my family...

I cannot believe we're so close to leaving. I've had friends come and go while I've been here but I feel like I just got here, seriously!

We had the amazing opportunity to hear from Elder Scott on Tuesday! It was super awesome. He spoke on revelation and prayer - communication with Heavenly Father. It was so wonderful, and again, I really needed it! I realized that I really need to rely more on prayer. Also, I KNOW that he was called of God. He is truly an apostle of Jesus Christ. What an incredible man.

We have started to speak Dutch all the time. It's SO HARD but so worth it. I can already tell I'm getting better.

Sister Peterson is hopefully leaving today or tomorrow! She's no longer our companion - a new group of Danish came in so she's with them. It's been a long process and she's super frustrated (for good reason) BUT she gets travel plans today.

I LOVE MY ZONE. I want to know all of these wonderful people forever. Hooray for the internet, and writing things down!

I think that's pretty much it.... Oh except we used Ghostbuster vacuums for service day. Truth.

ALMA 29:1-4 (Sometimes I feel like this. But not close to as selfless as he is. Because seriously... Read the whole chapter.)

MINDEN/JAMES AND MAGGI I need you to write me or email me or something. Haha. I miss you! If you are reading this... My email is kira.anjewierden@myldsmail.net. Or my address is over in the sidebar. Tyler, if you're reading this, you should tell them. Also, expect a letter like tomorrow or Saturday.

Also, my lovely Mariah Latu... You gave me quite a scare... Haha. I'll send you a letter soon!

I'll try to do MTC advice next week.... I have a lot of it. Many things to know about this wondrous place.

SO MUCH LOVE!

Put that Popsicle Down and Listen to Me!

HALLO AL DE VOLK!

I have 8 minutes so we are going to see how much I can get in here. Woo.

First. If you are a missionary, and you would like a real letter, give me a permanent address and I will send one to you. This 30 minutes to email thing is REALLY ridiculous. And I don't mean I disagree with it or anything, just that it's SO SOOSSOSO hard. Haha.

Next! Random mix of stuff.

I LOVE THE MTC! It is wonderful here. Sometimes the days are long, and sometimes you get up at 5 to do laundry (yeah, that's today, we actually tried to get up at 4 but it didn't work) so you can go to the temple at like 7:30 or 8ish and have a nap sometime during the day... But it is still super fantastic. I've also learned more Dutch in a week than I learned in like the first two years of Spanish. I'm pretty impressed... I don't know that I've got the gift of tongues yet, but I'll let you know when it comes. ;)
My companion, Zuster Hudson, and I have taught... 4 lessons now! It's weird to think that there have been that many! Our fake investigator, Ivan, said he'd think about being baptized when we invited him yesterday! WOOOO! Also, his real name is Broeder Hulme and he's really cool in real life too. So.

We have two just two districts of Dutchness. There are six of us in each, and mine is all sisters! It's crazy! And awesome. But crazy! Lots of estrogen going on there.

We have 4 teachers - Broeder Norton, Broeder Wells, Broeder Robinson, and Zuster Moses. The former two are my district's teachers and the latter two are generally the other district's, but there's been some switching as needed when certain people are gone or have class or whatever, since they're all students! When I first got here, I had a good hour alone in our classroom with Broeder Norton speaking a bunch of Dutch at me. It was kind of terrifying actually. I learned plenty that day though! And they all speak some English sometimes. So... Yup!

Okay I have like no time left. List!

-I have seen a million people that I know! It's so cool! :) I've hugged almost every sister that I know, even if we don't know each other well.... It's that MTC love. Seriously. Also. Michael Kamerath. If you are reading this - I've seen Elder Hill! A few times. I'd list the others too but I just don't have time!
-Elder Thornell! I saw Ben setting up for stuff in the gym. Didn't know he worked here! didn't get to say hi!
-I called John the Baptist Johannes de Dooder instead of Johannes de Dooper in one of our lessons... Yeah, Dooder means murderer/killer. Whooops. Haha our investigator was laughing so hard...
-Devotionals are awesome! I wish I could write more about our Sunday one, it was amazing... Maybe next week!
-I will try to include pictures next week!
-There will be a list of advice next week too... Yup!

AH I love you all! Also, I love letters... If you're on my blog, my address is under the WRITE ME tab! If you're not...

farewell talk

Here is my farewell talk. For those of you who have read my decision story here, some of this will be familiar - I felt prompted that I needed to share my story with my ward and those who were going to attend my farewell. I thought it turned out pretty well! And the meeting was amazing... It was a great day. :)

About a month ago, I had the opportunity to attend a wonderful mission prep class taught by Brother and Sister Reynolds. The topic was revelation – specifically personal revelation. I had been praying to know what I should speak on, since my topic was left up to me, and I felt impressed that this was my answer. I thought it was fitting, since it’s something that I have come to understand a bit more through recent events.

Preach My Gospel defines revelation as “communication from God to His children on earth” and states that it “provides guidance that can lead the faithful to eternal salvation in the Celestial kingdom.” It is directly related to prayer, which is really a two-way communication – we ask, and Heavenly Father answers. This is a truth that some other cultures and religions do not understand, but is so vital to receiving the Lord’s guidance in our lives. It is also something that I am learning to understand in my own life. I would like to share an example – an experience in my own life related to my decision to serve a mission, and what I learned about seeking for and receiving revelation in the process.

When President Monson announced the age change for missionaries last October, I was so excited! For as long as I can remember, I have had a strong desire to serve a mission. I remember singing I Hope They Call Me on a Mission in Primary, and then, after my growth spurt when I was 12, telling my mom that I'd already grown a foot or two. Before the change, I still had just under two years before I could even turn in my papers, but, with my 19th birthday in November, I could now turn them in as soon as they were completed. After talking to my parents about it, I made an appointment with the bishop of my Singles Ward in Logan to start the process. I hadn’t sought the Lord’s advice on the matter yet, but I really wanted to serve, so I decided that I simply could not wait.

I met with my bishop the Tuesday following conference. We talked for a while, then he said that because the bishop of my home ward had not responded to his communications yet, he couldn't give me access to my papers yet. As soon as he discovered that I hadn't really sought the Lord's advice on the matter, he advised me to fast, pray, and study it out in my scriptures until Sunday, when we'd have our next meeting. He also shared with me D&C 9:7-9, and urged me to follow the Lord's counsel found there.
Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me.
But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right. But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me.
That hit me really hard. I really hadn't asked yet... I knew that I needed to. I started to really ponder on those three verses, and I also started to question whether I really knew I was supposed to go. Growing up, I had received what I felt were confirmations that I was supposed to go on several occasions, but the more I thought about it all, the more I wondered whether they were actual confirmations or if I’d just wanted them to be confirmations. What if I wasn’t supposed to serve a mission, even though everything seemed to be working out in favor of it? I wanted to do the Lord’s will, but it was so hard for me to think about the possibility that, after a lifetime of desires, a mission might not be what the Lord had planned for me.

I followed my bishop’s counsel, and also the Lord’s counsel in D&C 9, but I didn’t feel like I was getting an answer. My Sunday appointment rolled around, and I told my bishop that I would like to start my papers regardless. I continued to fast, pray, and study as I finished my papers and went to the required doctor and dentist appointments, but still did not feel that I had an answer yet.

I finished my papers on a Tuesday, and my bishop sent them to the Stake level. The Stake Executive Secretary called, and I set up an appointment with a member of the Stake Presidency for the next Sunday. As time went on, I became more and more worried that what I thought was the lack of an answer might actually be the "stupor of thought" that the Lord mentions in D&C 9:9.
That Friday, I attended a wonderful Religion in Life devotional at the Logan Institute. The sister who spoke, I believe her name was Sister Olsen, talked about her mission story - she had not wanted to serve a mission, but her bishop had asked her to consider it. She prayed about it, but did not feel like she was getting an answer, so she assumed that the Lord was leaving it up to her, and decided that she wasn't going. A friend of hers attended a devotional where an older sister spoke about receiving answers to prayers, and suggested that Sister Olsen come talk to her and get her opinion on the situation. When asked, the older sister told her that she believed that the reason Sister Olsen was still concerned about the situation, despite her decision not to go, was that she had in fact received an answer, and it was a yes.

As wonderful as the devotional was, I started to doubt more than I ever had before. In my notes from the devotional, I wrote, "Have I already gotten my answer?" and "I need to be open to the Lord's will, even if His will is that I stay here." I was upset, and, as I thought about it more, I actually began to feel physically sick. I biked back to my apartment, took the stairs two at a time, entered my door, and called my mother.

I felt horrible - what if my answer really was no? What would I tell my bishop and the Stake Presidency? I knew that they'd understand, but I felt like I'd be letting them down, after taking up time they could have spent interviewing other people. My dark feeling turned into tears as I told my mom about the devotional and my doubts. She consoled me as best she could, but also told me that my fears could very well be real. She also reminded me that, if I felt darkly, maybe the feeling wasn't the Holy Ghost - maybe it was Satan. I'd forgotten about the power of the adversary in my search for an answer.

In Elder Melvin J. Ballard’s 1928 talk “Struggle for the Soul, he mentions Goethe’s Faust, in which an old man, Faust, wants to become young again. He prays for this transformation, but because it is an unrighteous desire, the Lord has no answer for him. Faust persists in his prayers, and the devil answers him, offering youth in exchange for his soul. Elder Ballard goes on to say that sometimes, “when we persist [in our prayers], not willing to say “Father, thy will, not mine, be done,” it is quite possible that the devil may answer us, as he did Faust.”

Something else to remember is that the Lord is not the only one who recognizes righteous desires. The adversary watches us as well, and will do everything within his power to bring us down. In the spring of 1820, Joseph Smith went into a grove of trees, seeking a peaceful place to ask the Lord which church he should join. Though it was there that he received his first vision of the Father and Son, he was first overcome by an evil, dark power. In Joseph Smith History 1:15, he says “Thick darkness gathered around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to sudden destruction.” As shown in his story, the easiest way to tell who is answering us can be found in the feelings itself. My feeling was dark – it made me feel uneasy and sick. In D&C 11:11, the Lord tells us: “I am the light which shineth in darkness…” and then in 11:13 “I will impart unto you of my Spirit, which shall enlighten your mind…” The Spirit will never give us a dark feeling – the Lord is light.

After discussing the distinct possibility that my feelings had come from the adversary, my mom advised me to continue praying and studying until my interview - maybe by then I'd have a definite answer. Despite my dismay at the thought of not going on a mission, I decided at that point that if my answer really was no, I would not go. I also felt that, either way, everything would make sense after my interview.

After what seemed like an eternity, my Sunday appointment rolled around. I walked into the office of President Rigby, the second counselor in my Stake Presidency. After an opening prayer and introductions both ways, he started the interview. I answered all of his questions, a little bit nervous that he'd tell me I wasn't supposed to go, or that I'd receive a definite answer that this was not what I was supposed to be doing. He asked me a few questions about my papers, made a few corrections... and then he asked me why I wanted to serve a mission.

As I pondered his question, I was overcome by an overwhelming sense of joy. I told him about how grateful I am for the Gospel of Jesus Christ in my life, and that I cannot bear to think that there are people out there who cannot partake in its blessings simply because they don't know about them! I realized that even though I did not know where I would be serving, I already loved the people there, wherever it was. I told him as much, and he told me that feeling would only grow. He congratulated me on my decision, told me he would send my papers on to Salt Lake later that day, and we closed with a prayer. I knew that I had finally received my answer.

As hard as those few weeks of doubt were, they were so worth it. If anything, they made me more sure about my decision in the end. To feel that immense darkness and then to feel overwhelming light so close together made everything so much more poignant. Really, I'm grateful for that horrible feeling, because it made the light seem that much brighter.

I learned a lot through this series of experiences, but these are the main points I would like to share.

The first is the significance of prayerfully seeking guidance – the Lord does not usually just give us what we’re looking for unless we live righteously and give heed to the counsel in James 1:5 – “If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not…”In October 1994 General Conference, President Boyd K. Packer said “You have your agency, and inspiration does not – perhaps cannot – flow unless you ask for it, or someone asks for you. No message in scripture is repeated more often than the invitation , even the command, to pray – to ask. Prayer is so essential a part of revelation that without it, the veil may remain closed to you. Learn to pray. Pray often. Pray in your mind, in your heart. Pray on your knees.”

The next is patience – to remember that the Lord will answer us in His own time, not in ours. One of my favorite conference talks, “Using the Supernal Gift of Prayer,” which Elder Richard G. Scott gave in April 2007, addresses this well, and actually really helped me as I waited for an answer. Elder Scott said -“I have discovered that what sometimes seems an impenetrable barrier to communication is a giant step to be taken in trust. Seldom will you receive a complete response all at once. It will come a piece at a time, in packets, so that you will grow in capacity. As each piece is followed in faith, you will be led to other portions until you have the whole answer. That pattern requires you to exercise faith in our Father’s capacity to respond. While sometimes it’s very hard, it results in significant personal growth.”  The Lord will answer us in pieces at times when they will impact us the most. He will also make sure that we really want an answer before he gives it to us. We need to truly seek for it – study it out in our scriptures, pray about it, and even fast about it. Ether 12:27 tells us that “…faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith.” We cannot obtain His counsel without exercising faith.

Last is the importance of surrendering your own will to the Lord’s. We need to follow Christ’s example and be willing to say, “…nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” We need to have the faith to accept the answer He has for us, whether it is what we desire or not. Again in the talk “Using the Supernal Gift of Prayer”, Elder Scott acknowledges that “At times it is difficult to recognize what is best or expedient for you over time. Your life will be easier when you accept that what God does in your life is for your eternal good.”

I then bore my testimony on personal revelation,  but also on revelation to Priesthood leaders. I know that my call was inspired. I know that it's not a coincidence that I'm serving in the land of my ancestors, speaking their language, or that I'm serving at the same time as my grandparents. I am so grateful for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, everyone! I am so excited to share it with my brothers and sisters in the Belgium/Netherlands mission!
